Netflix coming soon to PS3

Not sure if you guys heard, but Netflix is officially coming to PS3 soon. I will still use PlayOn for Hulu and whatnot, but not for Netflix. Maybe that would be a load off the PlayOn developers' shoulders to focus more on other services.

Oh yes! Finally. I came here to post a similar article.

I really look forward to something more stable. PlayOn has been so frustrating. If the PlayOn team was able to improve their Hulu support - maybe i'd not uninstall it immediately.

Re: Netflix coming soon to PS3

I wonder if Netflix and Sony developed some sort of software that runs on the PS3. IOW does this "Netflix access program" install and can I then remove the "disc"?

From what I read, it's going to be a Blu-ray with BD which gives online access to movies on blu-ray. This is probably b/c of the agreement Netflix has with Microsoft already but source said they didn't know the exact reason and netflix won't say it.

Re: Netflix coming soon to PS3

Yesterday I received an e mail from Netflix that the DVD for the PS3 is on its way. Hopefully I will receive it today and give it a try tonight. I will post here what I find out. Maybe the DVD is a stop gap until the next PS3 software update?

It's not a stop-gap. Its a loophole to avoid the exclusivity of Netflix's deal with Microsoft. The PS3 is perfectly capable of streaming Netflix without a disc; when the Xbox 360 exclusivity contract is done, there will be a PS3 firmware update that will allow streaming without a disc.

Got mine today. You have to have the disk in whenever you play (so you can't just install it onto the PS3 hard drive). So far I'm not impressed but it will help when PlayOn has issues.

Re: Netflix coming soon to PS3

There has got to be a way to "hack" this or find a workaround to get it to play from the PS3 hard drive. I have been thinking about this a great deal, and I know, I just know there has to be a way to trick the system. My disc was supposed to be here today, but for the very first time, Netflix missed the delivery date, so I haven't played with it yet. From what I understand, only the first 100k discs went out and they are starting to send more as the days go by.

On another note, everyone always complains that we are beta testers of PlayOn, well, with a disc for the PS3 and no other support as of yet, aren't we now beta testers for Netflix? Hmmm. When I get my disc and get a chance to play with it, I will post back if there is a way to not have it in the drive all the time.

Nonetheless, I ONLY use PlayOn for local media and it rocks the house for that, and I sometimes watch other things for fun, but for me, just the local media sharing that works for me is worth EVERY penny I paid for this software.

The PS3 has a weird ratio problem. Watch the first video.

For me I'll stick with PlayOn.

Re: Netflix coming soon to PS3

I did receive the disk yesterday. You have to log a key into Netflix.com and the disk has to be in the PS3 for it to work. It did play with no problems. But Playon works too. So if you are in a lazy mood and don't feel like getting up and putting the disk in, use Playon to stream Netflix.

As far as media sharing on the PS3, (IMHO) PS3 Media Server is way better than Playon. And it is a free internet install.

Though we also have a WII and for that Playon is excellent for streaming Netflix, Hulu and media sharing.

Re: Netflix coming soon to PS3

I got the disc too, works pretty good. Streaming is okay, but it tends to drop out in the main menus and it gets sluggish in the menus, and sometimes the cover art just disappears and reappears. The HD titles in Netflix leave a lot to be desired though. I have plenty of speed, but the HD titles would always top out at around 5-6Mbps even slower than streaming other things. I mean don't get me wrong, this is all great stuff being so new and all, and I think both PlayOn and Netflix will get it right soon. The HD didn't look bad, it just didn't look any different than DVD quality. And it is a pain in the #$% to have that disc but I hear it's only temp. All in growing pains, and like I said before, I love my PlayOn for local media.

When HULU starts charging, Mr. Rupert M can kiss my #$% cause I would never pay for that!

Re: Netflix coming soon to PS3

Having to use the Netflix DVD is a bit of a pain, but it worked fine with no problems for me. Video quality is that of a standard DVD. Both audio and video. Streaming Netflix is filler time. It is not as good as HD programing. And for the good stuff, get a Blu-ray disk and play it on the PS3 through a Home Theater system. There is no comparison.

you only use playon for local media there is a programs that are free that stream local media great and better than playon since they support more codecs. if you have a newer os like win 7 it has a media server that works great built in. iv only been using playon for netflix and hulu, i guess only hulu now.

Re: Netflix coming soon to PS3

The Netflix for PS3 service works far better than PlayOn is able to deliver right now. The quality of video far superior and I am able to actually watch WHOLE MOVIES WITHOUT IT STOPPING BEFORE THE END. And yes, the PS3 will have it's own Netflix icon by the end of 2010, just as soon as it's exclusivity contract ends with Microsoft.

Re: Netflix coming soon to PS3

I found the video quality to be similar to PlayOn. Where the Netflix disk wins is reliability. It's solid. No more pauses with 10780723 errors (or is it 80710723?). No pauses of death. No praying you don't bump the wrong button on the remote, for fear of having to start over. You never feel like you're walking on eggshells with it.

I'm sorry to say that as much as I like PlayOn, the Netflix provided experience is superior.

Re: Netflix coming soon to PS3

Frankly, we are actually surprised that some folks still prefer PlayOn for Netflix over the Netflix/PS3 disc solution. PlayOn is at a disadvantage here, as the DLNA protocol hinders a lot of the capabilities that PlayOn could potentially offer. More importantly, direct-to-device solutions, which skip the PC as the middleman, have the advantage of being inherently more reliable, and the business and technical integrations allow for more robust implementations.

That said, we still see ourselves as maintaining a distinct advantage in this space -- we offer a lot more content (including Hulu), and new content is rapidly being added, especially through third-party plugins. By being a one-stop solution for getting all types of Internet-based media directly to the TV through game consoles and DLNA devices, and with the knowledge that PC-side development is much faster than device firmware development, we have continued high hopes for our product, and for ones like it!

Re: Netflix coming soon to PS3

This Netflix Disc solution shows the potential of what Playon could be if they would develop DLNA client software and thus control things from one end to the other. The company that does this will own this market.

To get rid of the weird stretch set upscaler to normal.

Found this out at.

I never had the stretch problem as my upscaler is set to normal.
