I would like to know if there is or will ever be a way to install PlayOn without IE7? I use Firefox. Internet explorer is not even on my system (nLited version of Windows), and I would not install IE7 for many reasons (security and reliability come to mind). I was all set to buy this wonderful program until the demo install failed because I don't have IE.
The core PlayOn browsing is based completely on IE. If you aren't able to install it (regardless of whether you actually use it on your system), you unfortunately won't be able to use PlayOn.
We have no plans to remove this dependency, though it would be necessary once/if we look into porting to Mac (or Linux).

What does it depend on? Does it run in an actual browser window or does it just use the engine? What if I were to do a standalone/sandbox install of IE7, do you think it would work?
How do the standalone/sandbox installations of IE7 work exactly? With more details, we may be able to offer an educated guess.
