CPU USAGE BY PLAYON EVEN WHEN NOTHING IS PLAYING....
I've been watching my CPU Usage under the Windows Task Manager a lot latley and I've noticed that with Playon turned off I get very little CPU Usage zerp to 2% to 8% even though I'm online, on this website and typing right now.
However if I fire up the Playon software it peaks up to 100% at very regular intervals about 1sec apart and this is whether I'm doing ANYTHING in Playon or NOT???
This makes no sense. If I'm not watching any movies or any channels at all why is the usage the same as if I were watching a movie which is what I've seen when watching movies.
I just tested it with Bad Medicine the movie and the usage is the same.
That doesn't make any sense. If I am running the software in the background it should not be hitting the CPU as hard as when I'm actually watching something or searching for something on YouTube.
AnyOne got any Ideas???

I noticed cpu usage when I wasn't streaming anything when I had local media sharing (the beta feature) on. Do you have that checked by any chance? Otherwise I don't know what to suggest.
As a matter of fact I do hae Local Media Checked (Turned On) However I no longer am seeing the hits today as before and I've changed nothing. Is there a CPU Sharing routine running in the background of your software
from time to time by any chance?
For example did any of your IT Guys happen to download any of those types of routines on any of your servers to check them out. I know I've been tempted to help out the Cancer Society and SETI but didn't want to take the hit that would happen if I did load such a routine.
What do you think, could that have happened?

Whenever you watch a video through PlayOn, your CPU will continue to spike for 5 or more minutes, depending on whether or not you have "Always process entire video" selected in PlayOn Settings.
You can read more about this in the FAQ.
First, it's important to understand why your PC CPU is high in the first place with PlayOn: realtime transcoding requires serious horsepower! Whenever you watch a video on your device, your PC churns along, downloading the video and converting it to a format that your device is able to play. If you stop playback on your device, no clear signal is sent to the PC, so PlayOn cannot detect whether you have only temporarily paused or stopped. In order to have the option of returning to playback, PlayOn needs to continue processing the video in the background. You can however in PlayOn Settings toggle whether videos will always be processed fully to completion, or give up after 5 minutes of device inactivity.

Please read my original statement.
I'm talking about just having the app loaded. This was happening when there was no movies
being watched. No interaction whatsoever and the software was hitting a spike every 2 seconds
like clockwork.
That has since stopped.
So I'm saying I was NOT watching a video.
I wasn't even surfing the menus.
When this was happening.
It was happening 100% of the time and that was
the curious part.
Thank you for this consideration.

The next time it happens please send in a support ticket through PlayOn Settings. This is certainly not normal behavior.

I'm glad your interested in looking in to this.
I just wanted to post something that is now happening and its very good but I don't know why.
I'm seeing some weird things happen.
Not negative weird but POSITIVE WEIRD.
For Example, Right now on my Network:
Running Via Wireless - G Broadband Router Model No. WRT54G
I'm doing the following:
Downloading and installing Microsoft XP updates on an old BOXX Technologies Box 143MB worth.
I"m using the Crackle PlugIn to Watch Johnny Neumonic through the VuNow Box to my Sony HD Monitor.
I also have another Computer that is running Magic Jack online.
I'm typing this email on this computer that has Playon on it.
AND I'm only seeing a flucuation from 0% to 4% usage on average with an occasional 8% in the mix.
However Prior to this I was on Hulu watching a movie and it was pegging my CPU usage at 100% all the time.
WEIRD.
BTW The Crackle Johnny Neumonic movie is in HD and It running Flawlessly So I'm really at a loss as
to why I can now get this kind of performance.
The only thing I've downloaded on this computer today was a microsoft windows exploder 8 patch.
Hey, I'm happy it's working like this.
I just wish Crackle had a bit more to choose from.
I do have to state for the record that I did shut everything down all machines, unplugged the Cable Modem and the Wireless Router as well then restarted everything before this happened so that may have had a lot to do with it.
Also I'm wondering why Microsoft is so interested in Playon.
Every so often when things start acting weird like this and I shut things down I get a memory address error.
Then when I cold boot I get a notice that microsoft wants me to click on the dialog box to send them information about the error. I looked inside the message and it's just a .txt file and the name of the Playon Server application along with an hpdmp file. You guys got any ideas?

This is normal IF you "enable sharing of local Media". It's currently a CPU hog even sitting static.

Thank's Ron,
I wonder how many folks on this forum even use Task Manager to check their apps overhead.

I sure do all the time. I check CPU and network. CPU NEVER goes above 2% with local streaming. This is a quad core though, so no problems there. I stream all day for my youngin' on the weekends, he loves his movies, doesn't bother anything at all. Never a stutter, never any spikes, anything.
Now that I have said all that, this is on a Vista 32 bit OS. I installed everything on a Win 7 32 bit to give it a whirl. Sure enough, the HIGH CPU usage and I mean high was replicated. I heard all the fans in my machine just whizzing so I pulled up TM, and sure enough it was happening. Thing is, I just restarted PlayOn and it went away. A day later same thing. Not good if you leave your machine unattended and it does this, chance for overheating maybe? Anyhow, as I stated in other posts, I am back to Vista and it's perfect, so maybe if you run Win 7 same problem for you? I am waiting to try Win 7 again just due to so many media issues I ran into that I am sure they will fix.
If it's not Win 7, then that is a strange issue.
