Is there any plan for a Mac version. I figure it would only work for the PS3 streaming since I assume the 360 streaming is handled by WMP11. I am currently using Parallels to stream and its work pretty well, but I don't run Parallels all the time.

There are no concrete plans yet for a Mac version (see the FAQ). But we hope to add support at some time. We can't promise any timelines yet, unfortunately.

I'm glad it's on your radar screen, at least :). I'd like to add a plug for a Linux version.
A MAC version would be so sweet! I've been playing around with parallels tonight but so far no success- I haven't given up hope though because I've heard of at least one person who got Parallels to run it properly on a MAC. A natively supported version would rock!
Yes, we wish it was an easy port, but it won't be. In the meantime, we're sorry to say that you'll have to battle your way through Parallels or similar solutions.
If someone out there has a clear step-by-step guide for getting PlayOn working on Parallels, please let us know, and we'll add it to our FAQ!

I registered JUST to say that I want a mac version as well. And to others using parallels, you might try vmware fusion their networking interface typically is better than parallels IMO.
I got this working under vmware fusion on OSX 10.5.5. The process was pretty simple.
Start XP Virtual Machine
Install WMP 11
Install PlayOn
Start my Xbox, change the media source to PlayOn. Things just worked. Now, I do have a horse of a machine (8 core Mac Pro with 6G of ram) so I don't know of any performance realated issues.
Also, I'm running connect360 on my Mac (host os for vmware) and both seem to co-exist well. Everything worked for me but Hulu, which from my reading is expected.
Works just fine under fusion. No issues/nothing to debug. (other than the hulu issues which appear to be a general problem and not related to fusion)
Just registering to add to the count of folks who would love to see an osx version of the app developed!
i'd love if you could let me know your secret!!
what network config you use on vmware? NAT or Bridged?
i've tried both, without any luck... ps3 just doesnt see it :(
For this to work, you have to be using a router. Your Mac cannot be connected directly to the Cable or DSL modem.
By default, my Parallels installation was configured to use Shared Networking which did not work for PlayOn.
I went to the Parallels Configuration Editor (select Virtual Machine... from the Edit Menu while the VM is turned off) and selected Network Adapter from the list of Resources that are displayed in the Configuration Editor.
Under the Network Adapter Options on the right-hand side of the Configuration Editor window select the Bridged Ethernet radio button, then select the network adapter that your Mac uses. In my case, I selected en0: Ethernet Adapter as that's the network interface I use on my Mac. Also make sure the Enabled and 'Connect cable at Startup' options are checked.
Once you've selected the correct network adapter, click the OK button and start up your VM. You can verify that you have the right network settings by checking the IP address for your VM. It should be 192.168.x.x (select Run from the Start menu, type cmd and click the OK button. At the DOS prompt, type ipconfig and hit enter.)
Install PlayOn if not already installed and make sure it is running. By default, there is no PlayOn icon in the tray bar (I think it should be on by default) but you can change that in the PlayOn options. Once you've got PlayOn running, setup your NetFlix or Hulu account in PlayOn.
After this step, boot up your PS3 (sorry don't have an Xbox), then make sure Media Server is Enabled in the System menu on your PS3 (it's at the very bottom of the Network menu).
At this point, the PlayOn server running in Parallels on my Mac became available on my PS3 under the Video menu and I could easily stream my NetFlix movies with no stutter!
These instructions should work for VMWare as well though I can't confirm.
To MediaMall: Please keep a Mac version on your priority list and ability to port license over if a PC version has been bought. Running Parallels is a big drain.
cheers for that... i worked out that its my ps3 thats the problem... my xbox sees it no problem! wierd!
Hope you guys decide to make a Mac version as well. Once Netflix gains Mac compatibility later this year it would make a lot of sense.
As much work as it would be to create a Mac version, I think it would bring you guys more users, there is absolutely no solutions out there like this that are mac compatible. I for one would love to run a mac version so I wouldn't have to keep Fusion running just for this program!
Thanks again for an awesome product!
Just saw that native Mac Netflix support is being tested now via Silverlight 2.0. I'm guessing they are going to be transitioning the Windows side to Silverlight as well since it's supposed to have some great new navigation features. Two questions. One ...is this something that makes a Mac port of PlayOn more likely now? And two ...When they move to Silverlight will it make fast forwarding, etc possible through PlayOn?
http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/26/netflix-finally-brings-watch-instantl...
Oh, and one final question. If I go buy your product once it comes out of beta (for Windows) ...and you come out with a Mac version sometime down the road ...would I have to buy it again for Mac? Or do you think you'd implement some sort of cross platform licensing scheme?
The Silverlight implementation for Netflix shouldn't really have any effect on our ability to port PlayOn to Mac, nor on how we may be able to support fast forwarding in the future.
We haven't decided yet how we might implement the licensing if and when we port to Mac. It largely depends on what other "big" features were added to PlayOn by that time. Sorry we can't be specific on this one yet, but Mac support is still quite a ways away. We'll keep this issue in mind though.

Thanks for the quick response. I'll probably be buying the PC version for now (once it's out of beta) ..but having to boot into Windows via VMWare isn't something I'd like to have to do all that long. Don't forget about us "other" users! I'm sure I'd give in and shell out more money for a Mac version if that's what it takes to get one in the works ;)
Hook it up if you really want this program to take off. A timely Mac version is essential to your success.
I have a g5 that I would like to run aas a media server and playon would be perfect on this computer. No intel though.... lame.
A Mac version shouldn't be that hard, right? It's not a very big program. C'mon, just crank that Mac version out, and let's watch some movies!
it'd be killer to have this natively under mac, since it opens up the product beyond us ubergeeks and reduces incompatibilities between software.
I ran it okay with connect360 on fusion. but i will say it is a pain to have to run windows in order for this to work! I wonder if the mac version is in play.
BUMP THIS THREAD UP!

Only reason I registered. I don't have parallels or any of those software, and honestly, I can't see myself spending 80 bucks right now to get parallels.
If you can write one for the Mac OS, I and I am sure a whole bunch of us will greatly appreciate it.
For what it's worth, I also would buy the Mac version if it were available. I know there are less Mac users than Windows users, but from a marketing perspective I wonder if one group tends toward media convergence more than another. That might help speed things along (or not, I don't know).
i'd buy a mac version to. Right now I use my wife's PC. When she is online some playon vids are choppy.
Read this post and should fix your problems.

I just created an account to say that I'm eager to see a Mac version released.
It's the only thing holding me back from buying this great software. Glad to hear it's on the blip screen.
I hope with the boom in Mac's popularity lately it will encourage developers to move porting to Macs higher up the priority list. =-)
Thank you!
im a mac user i have playon on bootcamp and would definitely love to have this running through my mac with out having to go to my pc partition
Thank you for posting these instrcutions!
The "bridged" network connection is what did the trick to get PlayOn to show up under the Video section of my Sony PS3.
Chose Virutal Machine > Settings > Removable Devices - Network > Connect directly to the physical network (Bridged) from VMWare Fusion, then restart.
I also upped the RAM settings from 512Mb to 1276Mb based on what the PlayOn System Check recommended.
MediaMall, a Mac native application would be great!
I would strangle a cute little baby kitten for a mac version of this software.
I'll put my two cents in for a Mac/Linux/multi-platform version. If PlayOn were re-written in Java or Flash, it'd be multi-platform ready.
The fourty dollars is your now! I would purchase a Mac version in a heart beat! I also signed up just to put in my support Mac, please do make a Mac version.
Gang -- we hear you, but we have to be as honest as possible about this: it's not realistic in the foreseeable future that PlayOn will work on Mac or Linux. It is almost exclusively a question of resources. The amount of engineering effort required to port PlayOn from Windows is quite huge, and we lack the ability currently to even kick off a project for this. So, unless big bags of cash drop from the skies, you are unfortunately out of luck for now. We absolutely agree that there is a compelling marketplace for this, and it would be a fantastic business decision -- don't get us wrong!
PlayOn Administrator
Exactly how "Big" do the bags of cash falling from the sky need to be? One more vote from a Mac. I wonder if one or a group of your developers would be willing to work, (or perhaps a contract developer) on donations off hours... I'd gladly donate the cost of windows and parallels, as I'm sure plenty of other interested parties would donate generously as well?
Donations would never be enough, unfortunately. Keep in mind that we've been around, working on our technology, for over 5 years, and Mac functionality is largely a rewrite. So, we're talking about quite large bags of money.

Just use Boxeee (http://boxee.tv). The bad thing about Boxee is that it's doesn't do UPNP. But I've been contemplating just getting a laptop and hooking it directly to my TV monitor...
Another big ups for a mac version. Please make it happen or even better make it a stand alone install in a device so a computer is not neccesary. Thanks in advance, rebooting in Win 7 works fine btw.
