Linux version

I love using this on my PC but would love to see a linux version that works under Ubuntu and other flavors. Any chance you guys are working on this down the road soon? Reason being for me is I normally keep my linux box running for other servers whereas my PC I shut down after using it.

thanks again for a great product!

Have you tried under Wine?

Just wondering if you have tried using Playon under wine? I know you will need IE6+, Net 2.0/Mono, but what else?

Thanks!

Tried

I tried using Wine. You have to install an update of the .NET framework(depends what version of windows you are emulating) but none are supported in wine. Website for wine list them all as garbage. Are you looking at developing one for Linux. I am very interested in leaving Windows in the dust.

have tried vmware, crossover

I've tried running playon on winxp on vmware, but it dies after the first few seconds. I think the processor needs are too great for the levels of virtualization/os it would need to slug through. There are reports of people getting it working on vmware fusion.

http://www.google.com/search?q=playon+vmware+fusion

I've also made a pledge to buy Crossover if they provide support for Playon. Crossover is basically a commercial fork of Wine.

I'd love to see Playon work on Linux. Right now, its the only program that prevents me from getting rid of Windows as a boot os.

Re: Linux version

I have tried for about 5 hrs to get it running through wine. I can get .net 2.0 installed using winetricks, but can't get the installer to run. I may have a chance if i can get a msi copy of the media server. If i can get past it looking for .net 2.0 there is a msi extracting function built into wine.

Also they should look at making it compatible with Mono. It's an opensource version of Microsoft .net. Most people who don't want to pay for cable don't like paying for Windows either. Getting a working version of this on linux would allow me to run 1 machine instead of 2.

Re: Linux version

Also, as a suggestion would you sticky this and the mac threads to the top. I believe this subject will come up enough. It will save people from searching for a post about it every time they look to see if there is an update about it.

Re: Linux version

Don't kid yourself - the number of Linux/Mac users is tiny compared to the number of Windows users. There is really no incentive for MediaMall to port this to those platforms. And I say this as somebody who runs both an Ubuntu Server and Desktop at home.

From what I hear Wine sucks. Why not use VMWare or Virtual Box. These are both vastly superior to Wine and are known to work. I've got it working. If you want PM me or email me privately.

For a Linux solution, have you tried Boxee? The problem for me with Boxee is 1) there's no 64-bit version and 2) it doesn't do UpNP.

Re: Linux version

It seems as though PlayOn is written in either C# or VB, both of which can run on Linux (there is a .net framework for Linux). The only issue is that the UI was probably done in Windows Forms, which is not portable. Perhaps if a project admin was feeling crazy enough to let me have a peek at the code I could do a native Linux port.

Re: Linux version

We've already looked into this. The UI is the least of the problems, as there are a number of base Windows APIs that are not ported to Linux/Mono yet, and which PlayOn relies on.

Re: Linux version

My understanding is that Mono, like most open source - indeed software in general, is a constantly moving target. Maybe those API's have been implemented now. Perhaps admin could list the required APIs and brennygoogles or me could take them and pursue the Mono team for implementation...

Re: Linux version

We've already done an analysis not too long ago, and we don't see how it's possible. PlayOn relies on a number of Windows components such as Microsoft Internet Explorer (including its ActiveX), WMI, and hundreds of P/Invoke functions.

Re: Linux version

How it's done is that you say what you need and then people complain that they want it. Eventually developers develop it. I had, at one time, complied IE for HP-UX (long time ago) so such things are indeed possible.

Meantime perhaps you could make an effort to choose more portable facilities instead of proprietary ones!

BTW: Active/X is a very insecure way to go.

Re: Linux version

Perhaps this is in the wrong area, or I am missing something...

I have a vista machine with playon, but I have my TV hooked up to a Linux box: Ubuntu. I just want to stream from my vista machine to my firefox/Linux box to watch. The Wii is ok but I would like to do the Linux. Any suggestions...

Re: Linux version

Install Boxee on the Linux box instead. It does what Playon does and much more. Plus it's free. Since your Linux box is hooked up to your TV already it's a better way to go. Playon gives you the luxury of being able to stream your video to your TV via such devices as a PS3/XBox or Wii. This allows you to stream it from your big desktop in your office or wherever to your living room or wherever. But if you have a capable machine already hooked up to your TV you don't need Playon - Boxee'll do it for you.

Other options are to use say Hulu's own Hulu Desktop, just out for Linux, though this limits you to just Hulu - but the interface is fairly nice.

Not sure if Boxee will do things like Netflix but it does hook up to many, many sources on the Internet.
